KVL, a Maori-owned forestry firm, says demand for its export logs is up about 8%.
With North America all but pulling out of exports to China, director Jacob Kajavala said business could not be busier.
KVL has taken on several new staff in Kawerau this year and it's possible more expansion could occur in the near future.
Norske Skog, last month shut one of its two paper machines at the mill in the town, resulting in the loss of 110 jobs.
KFL supplies some logs to Norske Skog, but its business was not affected by the shutdown.
