Whanganui iwi keen to progress settlement

7:03 pm on 24 April 2013

The Whanganui River Maori Trust Board is urging iwi members to give their input to move ahead to the Deed of Settlement stage in its Treaty negotiations with the Crown.

In August last year, an interim agreement (Tutohu Whakatupua) was signed with the Crown setting out the parameters of an unprecedented legal status to be created for the river, called Te Awa Tupua status.

The trust board says getting to the next stage is reliant on gaining the approval of iwi over April and May for Whanganui River Treaty negotiators to approach the final settlement stage.

The board is running a number of hui throughout the country to get feedback from iwi.
