The leader of a Northland campaign to get more Maori onto local authorities has set its sights on the general elections, with a focus to register Maori to vote.
None of the nine candidates involved in the 'Tu Kotahi - Stand As One' campaign were elected to the region's decision-making tables.
Group convener Mike Kake says there are now no Maori on the Whangarei District Council, in a district which has a Maori population of 37%.
He says the group learned that many Maori were not registered to vote and did not understand the system, which needs to change before the 2014 general elections.
Mr Kake says Tu Kotahi will work on implementing a strategy to register Maori which will also have benefits for the next local elections.
