Indigenous nurses hui planned

8:40 am on 6 June 2014

Plans are underway for the first ever Aotearoa Indigenous Nurses hui in Auckland.

The New Zealand Nurses Organisation will host the conference in August, in conjunction with its annual general meeting.

The kaiwhakahaere of the union, Kerri Nuku, said she had been working with First Nations people who, like Maori, have not had the same opportunities in the health sector.

She said the union wanted to encourage Maori members to think about their rights as indigenous people, and the importance of voting heading into the elections.

Ms Nuku says the union wants to inspire the nurses to become advocates for Maori workforce recruitment and retention in the health sector.
