Voting deadline looms for Te Atiawa

2:29 pm on 10 July 2014

Time is running out for Te Atiawa descendants to vote on their tribe's Treaty of Waitangi settlement.

The northern Taranaki iwi initialled its deed at Parliament at the beginning of June, which includes a total settlement package of $91 million.

Tribal descendants need to be registered first with Te Atiawa Iwi Authority to be able to vote on whether to accept the deed to be passed into law, and on the post-settlement governance entity that will manage the tribe's assets.

The tribal authority reported that on the 4 July, just over 20 percent of the 6312 iwi members had voted - but it wants all uri (descendants) aged 18 years and over to make a decision.

All adult members have until 17 July to cast their ballots online or by post.
