$6 million dollars is to be shared among groups that want to improve the health of the Waikato River.

Waikato River Authority is the organisation charged with restoring the waterway, working with the Crown and tangata whenua.

Local organisations are being encouraged to submit applications, which the river authority will assess and allocate among them.

It is receiving applications through until 16 December and successful applicants will be notified early next year.

The authority's website waikatoriver.org.nz has more information about the funding criteria and application forms.
