39 arrests at Ohakune Mardi Gras

Police say a lack of snow, and a delayed opening of ski fields, has led to fewer arrests being made at Saturday night's Ohakune Mountain Mardi Gras.

About 7000 people attended and 39 were arrested compared to 54 last year, mostly for breaches of the local liquor ban.

Sergeant Mike Craig describes some teenage girls as being completely trashed, and leaving themselves highly vulnerable.

Ten drivers were over the legal alcohol limit, 19 fewer than last year.

Mr Craig says most of those people were trying to drive out of the area on Sunday morning, something that's unacceptable after just two hours sleep in some cases.
