Australia's opposition leader admits asylum policy dangerous

7:28 pm on 8 July 2012

The leader of the opposition in Australia admits his policy to send asylum seekers back to Indonesia is dangerous, but the policy is the correct one.

Tony Abbott says if he forms a government it will turn back boats when it is safe to do so.

He says as long as the boats keep trying to make their way to Australian shores, tragedies will keep happening.

The ABC reports that he adds turning the boats around will send the clearest possible signal to people-smugglers and their customers that, in his words, "the game is up".
