Death of Oscar winner

Updated at 3:50 pm on 16 July 2012

Oscar-winning American actress Celeste Holm has died.

Holm, 95, was admitted to a hospital in New York last week, but CNN reports she died at home surrounded by family.

Her first major Broadway role came in a 1940 revival of The Time of Your Life with Gene Kelly followed by a notable role in Rodgers & Hammerstein's Oklahoma! in 1943.

After success on Broadway, she went to Hollywood where her performance in Elia Kazan's Gentleman's Agreement, a 1947 tale of anti-semitism, won her the best supporting actress Oscar.

Other films included All About Eve (1950) and High Society, in which she played a wise-cracking blonde who sang Who Wants to be a Millionaire with Frank Sinatra.

Holm also appeared in numerous television series in the 1970s and 1980s, including Falcon Crest and Archie Bunker's Place.
