An Iraqi army intelligence officer and three bodyguards have been killed near his home by a suicide bomber in the northern town of Tal Afar.
A BBC correspondent says General Ali Aouni was not the intended target. He lived next door to another officer, who was unhurt in the explosion.
Tal Afar was a battleground between US forces and insurgents in 2005. It is located about 150km east of the Syrian border and 420km north-west of Baghdad.
