Protesters in Bangladesh chanted "hang him" as the owner of a factory building that collapsed last week, killing nearly 400 people, was led into court in Dhaka dressed in a helmet and bullet-proof jacket.
Mohammed Sohel Rana is one of eight people arrested over the disaster in the commercial suburb of Savara about 30km from the Dhaka.
Police are looking for another factory boss who they say is a Spanish citizen.
Officials said the eight-storey complex had been built on swampy ground without the correct permits.
About 2500 people have been rescued from the wreckage, but officials believe they are unlikely to find more survivors in the rubble of the building, which collapsed at 9am (local time) on 24 April burying hundreds of garment workers.
Mr Rana was arrested by police in a border town on Sunday apparently trying to flee to India, Reuters reports.
"Put the killer on the gallows, he is not worth of any mercy or lenient penalty," one onlooker outside the court shouted on Monday.
The court ordered that Mr Rana be held for 15 days on remand for interrogation.
