A jury in the United States has awarded damages of $US240 million to 32 mentally disabled men who suffered decades of abuse while working at a turkey processing company.

Jurors in Davenport, Iowaheard that they were subjected to kickings, verbal abuse, denied proper toilet breaks, and forced to work when ill.

One witness said the disabled workers - who were each paid just over 76 dollars a month - had been virtually enslaved.

The verdict is in addition to $US1.5 million in back wages awarded to the men in 2012.

The BBC reports the company has now been liquidated.
