Three boats intercepted near Christmas Island

Three boats carrying a total of 208 asylum seekers were intercepted close to Christmas Island on Friday.

AAP reports one was close enough to be spotted by police on the island.

In a statement from Home Affairs Minister Jason Clare said HMAS Bathurst intercepted a vessel north of Christmas Island which had 75 people on board.

HMAS Larrakia separately intercepted another boat carrying 33 passengers and two crew.

The statement said this vessel was spotted by Australian Federal Police on Christmas Island.

On Friday night, HMAS Broome detected and intercepted a third boat north of Ashmore Islands. The boat had 95 passengers and three crew on board.
