A five-year old Pakistani girl is in critical condition after being kidnapped and brutally raped in the eastern city of Lahore, police say.

The girl was found outside a hospital on Friday evening there, a day after she went missing from a low-income neighbourhood in the city, Lahore police chief Chaudhry Shafiq says.

"We suspect that unknown men kidnapped the girl and after raping her threw her outside the hospital."

He says CCTV footage showed a security guard from Lahore's Sir Ganga Ram hospital carrying the victim inside on his shoulder after he found her lying on the road in a critical condition.

Doctors say the child was raped several times and is intensive care, AFP reports.

AFP reports Pakistan's Supreme Court summoned top police officials on Saturday for an update on their investigation into the crime.

Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry has ordered the police chief of Punjab province to inform the court about the progress of the investigation after hearing reports about the rape victim late Friday, senior police official Omar Virk told reporters.

Provincial law minister Rana Sanaullah says those responsible would be found and punished.

"Those who have done this are not humans but beasts and will be arrested and prosecuted under the law and given exemplary punishments," he told reporters.
