Anger growing in PNG over destruction of artworks

Anger is growing in Papua New Guinea at the destruction of carved pieces at the Parliament buildings in Port Moresby, which have prompted outcries of cultural vandalism.

The speaker, Theo Zurenuoc, this month removed carved panels from the front of the building, despite a call from prime minister, Peter O'Neill, to stop.

Radio New Zealand International reports he is now dismantling 15 metre tall totems that took three years for master craftsmen to carve.

Alexander Rheeney, who is editor of the Port Moresby newspaper Post Courier, says many people are very upset.

He says letters to the editor as well as discussions taking place on social media indicate a lot of Papua New Guineans are condemning the actions of the Speaker.
