Qld health employees repay taxpayers

Queensland Health employees who were overpaid because of a flawed payroll system have agreed to repay more than $A2.25 million, after receiving more than $A90 million in overpaid wages.

AAP reports about 1650 will repay $A2.137 million under new arrangements, while a further $A110,000 will be recovered by employees increasing their existing repayment plans.

They are the first lot to select a repayment option in their payroll system.

Queensland Health Minister Lawrence Springborg said the repayment option is part of the efforts to recover millions of dollars lost in the payroll debacle.

There was $A91 million in overpaid wages, increasing at an average $A1.7 million each fortnight, when the current government took office, he said.

About $A30 million had been repaid, but about $A90 million is still owing.

AAP reports thousands of employees were underpaid, overpaid or not paid at all when IBM rolled out the faulty system in 2010.

The ultimate cost to taxpayers is expected to be $A1.2 billion.
