The authorities in Bangladesh are investigating how a train carrying passengers set off on a journey without a driver, travelling backwards for 27 kilometres before coming to a halt.

Nobody was hurt.

The stationmaster at its starting point told the BBC it happened when the driver got down to have a cup of tea.

It appears he left the engine running, or that his assistant mistakenly put the engine into reverse gear - whereupon it moved off, to the passengers' alarm.

The ticket inspector came to the rescue, eventually stopping the train after half an hour.
