A major earthquake of magnitude 7.2 has struck close to New Caledonia.

The quake was at a shallow depth of 15 km below the seabed but the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there has been no tsunami. The Hawaii-based monitoring service said all available data indicated a tsunami was not expected.
The epicentre was located 116 km east of the town of Tadine, on the Loyalty Islands.
