Pope Benedict XVI has celebrated an open-air mass in Scotland on his first state visit to Britain.

Tens of thousands of people have been attending the mass, in Bellahouston Park, Glasgow. The Pope urged Britain to stay faithful to its Christian roots, even in an age of religious disbelief.

At the start of a visit to the United Kingdom, he said he wants to "extend the hand of friendship" to the whole of the country.

The Pope was welcomed in Edinburgh by Queen Elizabeth II, who said the visit was an opportunity to deepen the relationship between Catholicism and the Churches of England and Scotland.

She also praised the Catholic Church's "special contribution" to helping the poorest and most vulnerable around the world.

Tens of thousands of people cheered and waved flags as the Pope travelled through Edinburgh in the Popemobile. Some small protests also took place.

Pope Benedict earlier acknowledged that church authorities were too slow in responding to revelations of child sexual abuse by priests.
