A Russian spacecraft carrying two cosmonauts and an American astronaut is heading to the International Space Station after lifting off from a launch site in Kazakhstan.

They will join three other crew members on the station after a two-day trip from Earth.

They will spend six months aboard the station, a $US100 billion project of 16 nations that has been under construction about 355km above Earth since 1998.
