Taliban admit killing Saudi diplomat

10:24 pm on 16 May 2011

Pakistan's al Qaeda-linked Taliban says it was responsible for the killing of a Saudi Arabian diplomat in the city of Karachi on Monday.

It said it would keep carrying out such attacks until the United States stopped chasing al Qaeda and launching drone strikes.

An official at the Saudi embassy identified the man as a security official working for the consulate.

Police say the man was driving in a vehicle with diplomatic plates when two armed motorcycle riders opened fire in a city neighbourhood and then fled, AFP reports.

The attack comes two days after unidentified attackers threw hand grenades at the Saudi consulate in Karachi, the country's commercial hub. No one was hurt in that attack.

Al-Qaeda is violently opposed to the Saudi government and has vowed revenge for the killing of its leader, Saudi-born Osama bin Laden, by American special forces in the Pakistan city of Abbottabad on 2 May.
