Japan to bid for 2020 Olympics

Updated at 9:22 pm on 16 July 2011

The Japanese Olympic Committee has formally announced that Tokyo will bid to host the 2020 Olympic Games.

Tokyo lost out to Rio de Janiero for the hosting of the 2016 summer Olympics and the BBC says it had been expected to renew its bid to hold the Games as a sign of its determination to rise again after March's devastating earthquake and tsunami.

Announcing the bid, the president of the committee said the last time Tokyo had hosted the summer Olympics in 1964, it had been to show the world how much Japan had recovered from the Second World War.

He said Japan wanted to make the 2020 Games a similar symbol of recovery.

Rome and Madrid have announced that they will bid to host the 2020 Summer Olympics.
