Air Canada flight resumes after smoke scare

7:38 pm on 28 July 2011

An Air Canada plane is on its way to Vancouver after earlier having to return to Sydney after smoke was detected on board.

The airline says fuel was dumped to lighten the Boeing 777 so it could land on Thursday afternoon.

The plane carrying 250 passengers left Sydney at 10.30am local time for a 15-hour flight to Vancouver but was forced to turn back and land about 12.10pm, the ABC reports.

Air Canada says the plane was forced to turn back after the crew saw smoke coming from an oven in the galley.

The plane dumped fuel over Hornsby and Longreef to lighten the load before landing at Sydney Airport.

Air Canada said fire crews checked the plane before it resumed the flight and none of the passengers were injured in the incident.
