Rwandan men reluctant to have vasectomies

A plan to tackle population growth in Rwanda by promoting vasectomies is coming up against an unsurprising problem. Most men there don't want the operation.

A UN estimate of the population in Rwanda was 10.2 million in 2010. It is the most densely populated country in Africa; the average mother has five children.

The United Nations says population growth is a major obstacle in eradicating poverty and hunger in Rwanda. The number of people living in poverty there has risen by 800,000 in just five years.

But the BBC reports that men who agree to a vasectomoy are in the minority. Apart from condom use, birth control is usually left to women.
