Australia unemployment rate rises

Australia's unemployment rate surged to an eight-month high in July, raising further concerns about a slowdown in its economy.

The unemployment rate rose to 5.1% in July from 4.9% the month before, after the loss of 22,000 full-time jobs, the ABC reports.

There are concerns that high borrowing costs and weak consumer spending, coupled with floods earlier in the year have hurt the Australian economy.

Last week, Australia's central bank cut its annual growth forecast to 3.25% from 4.25%.
