Libya's interim head appeals for weapons against Gaddafi

The head of Libya's National Transitional Council (NTC) has appealed for weapons as his forces fight to capture parts of the country still loyal to Muammar Gaddafi.

Mustafa Abdul Jalil told the BBC that the ousted leader was hiding somewhere in southern Libya, a vast desert area, and planning revenge attacks on cities and infrastructure across the country.

A written message attributed to Colonel Gaddafi appealed to the United Nations to stop "crimes" against his birthplace Sirte.

Earlier, the United States said it was encouraged by the increasing control the NTC was exercising over security forces in the country.
