Witnesses say there has been more violence, with four more people reportedly killed and many others wounded.
A number of the casualties appear to be Yemeni soldiers who have defected and joined the protesters.
The protesters are demanding the resignation of President Ali Abdullah Saleh.
Mr Saleh has so far resisted calls from many Western countries to stand down, despite saying on several occasions he was prepared to do so.
