Dreamliner makes maiden commercial flight

Boeing's 787 Dreamliner has made its first commercial flight from Tokyo to Hong Kong - three years later than planned because of delays in production.

The Dreamliner is thought to be a milestone in aircraft design because it's partly made from carbon fibre and plastics.

Boeing says that makes it about 20% more fuel-efficient than similarly sized models flying today.

Wednesday's flight was a special charter, with normal services by All Nippon Airlines due to start in November.

The airline auctioned six business-class seats on the inaugural flight, with one selling for $US34,000 - about 13 times the price of a regular business-class ticket between the two cities.

The BBC reports Boeing plans to make 10 Dreamliners a month from 2013. But the long delay has hurt its business: last week, China Eastern Airlines cancelled orders for 24 of the planes, rather than wait for production to pick up.

Boeing has more than 800 orders for the Dreamliner, and the average list price is $US201.7 million.
