Protesters in Cairo are preparing to hold another mass rally to force Eqypt's military rulers to step aside.
State media in Egypt reported that former prime minister Kamal Ganzouri has provisionally agreed to form a new government.
The BBC reports that the news has not been welcomed by many people.
If he takes the job, Mr Ganzouri will still be accountable to Egypt's ruling military council, which has rejected calls to step down immediately.
Parliamentary elections are due on Monday.
Mr Ganzouri served in the government of ousted president Hosni Mubarak in the late 1990s and was popular at the time.
He later fell out with his boss, who accused him of mis-managing Egypt's economy.
The interim cabinet appointed by the military resigned this week as protests in Cairo and other cities turned violent.
Demonstrators have been calling for what they have described as a "national salvation government" to oversee the process of democratic transition.
