Kaikoura is still recovering after the 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck the region on Monday.

New Zealand Post is planning two flights into the quake-hit town today, carrying several hundred kilograms of mail and courier parcels that have been held up in Christchurch and Blenheim.

The first flight arrived this morning and the second is scheduled to land shortly.

New Zealand Post said it would still take a couple of days to get the items sorted and delivered, as there were a number of logistical challenges to deal with, including road closures and fuel supplies.

Once the inland road to Kaikoura is open again, New Zealand Post will begin using that.
