The New Zealand men's and women's eights will have to go to repechages to make their respective finals at the World Rowing Championships on Lake Karapiro.
The men finished behind Germany in their heat, just failing to secure the automatic finals spot.
The women were third in their heat.
Both New Zealand crews are generally young and inexperienced at this level. They are the only New Zealand crews in action on Tuesday.
