Nauru speaker steps down

11:44 am on 21 January 2003

The Nauru parliament is deadlocked after the speaker resigned amid the latest challenges to the presidency.

The speaker, Vassal Gadoengin, stepped down in an apparent bid to shore up the position of Bernard Dowiyogo who had won a leadership ballot on Saturday.

That ballot came amid a rivalry with Rene Harris who resigned as president after retaining the position through a court order.

This paved the way for another former president, Kinza Clodumar, to seek the leadership but with the speaker standing down, the house is divided and it is unlikely to be able to pass the budget.

Mr Clodumar says one MP is being lobbied to tilt the balance of power.
