Prominent Vanuatu political leader quits politics

One of the more prominent people in Vanuatu political life for the past decade says he has had it with politics.

Businessman Dinh Van Than, the President of the National United Party, is resigning along with the secretary general, Willie Jimmy.

Both say in a statement that they are standing down after the party's poor result in last week's election.

Unofficial figures show it has so far won 8 seats, but Dinh van Than says they should finish with 11 or 12.

But he concedes it is likely the current coalition of the Vanuaaku Pati/Union of Moderate Parties will continue to run the country.

Dinh van Than, who is the largest private sector employer in Vanuatu, says business and politics do not mix well.

"Vanuatu is so small you know and when you do the politics and you do business that's two things is not managed good you see. But I think i give eleven years of my time to politics and I think that is enough."

Dinh van Than.

Earlier this week, Willie Jimmy, who retained his seat in the Port Vila Constituency, said that the NUP needed a ni-Vanuatu leading the Party.
