6:18 pm on 15 May 2002

Fiji's prime minister, Laisenia Qarase, says he has not yet invited the Labour Party leader, Mahendra Chaudhry, for talks to resolve the country's political impasse.

Mr Qarase made the statement in parliament, and broadcast by Radio Fiji, in response to a question from the deputy Labour leader, Krishna Dutt.

"I have not issued an official invitation to the leader to the leader of the Fiji Labour Party for a discussion on any issue. It is important to me to judge the right moment that I should do that. The right moment has not come through yet. It depends on the responses, the vibes that I get from the other side. And they are all not conducive for me to extend that invitatiion. On the other hand, he has every right and the freedom to ask for a discussion from me. And if I receive that then I will consider that particulat request at the rigght time, at the right moment."
