Niue may get jet link from Polynesian Airlines

The Premier of Niue, Young Vivian, says the people are very happy and pleased about the prospects of a new jet air link for the island.

Niue's tourism traffic dropped sharply last year after Royal Tongan Airlines was forced to downgrade its turbo prop service between Niue and Nuku'alofa which has been the only air link to and from Niue.

Passengers have to catch connecting flights Tonga, including those to and from New Zealand.

But Mr Vivian says they have an agreement in principle with Polynesian Airlines, connecting the island directly with New Zealand.

"there are two flights each week, one is north bound and one is south bound, that will be, one Apia, Niue, Auckland, and Auckland, Niue, Apia"

Young Vivian.

He says while they still need to sight the detail of the agreement it is hoped to have the service in place by October.

Despite the agreement, the service between Niue and Tonga will continue.
