15 accused of criminal conspiracy want trial against them dropped

Fifteen senior public figures accused of criminal conspiracy in the hiring of Vanuatu's police commissioner will move to have the trial dismissed for lack of evidence.

Our correspondent in Port Vila, says the 15 could also bring charges against police.

A hearing on the charges has been postponed because of the unavailabity of the public prosecutor, Heather Lini, and to give the prosecution time to gather more evidence.

The case follows the controversial appointment of Mael Apisai as Commissioner, even though he had not been on a shortlist prepared by the Police Services Commission.

His appointment has since been quashed and Holly Simon, who was deputy commissioner, has been made acting commissioner.

Mr Simon's complaint over the manner of Mr Apisai's appointment sparked the 15 arrests.
