Indonesia's attempts to implicate Australia in Freeport mine deaths baseless

6:37 pm on 11 September 2002

A Papuan human rights group says attempts by the Indonesian government to implicate Australia in last month's fatal ambush at the Freeport mine is a smokescreen to hide the Indonesian military's role.

John Rumbiak from Els-ham says the claim is based on his group travelling to Sydney on the day of the ambush when unidentified gunmen shot dead two Americans and an Indonesian.

The Indonesian government has blamed a militant arm of the Free Papua or OPM movement for the attack while human rights groups say it was a military operation.

Mr Rumbiak says Jakarta is trying to hide the military's alleged involvement by trying to readdress Australia's role in East Timor in 1999.

The Indonesian Government is accusing us but targeting the Australian govenrment. The Indonesian government is now picking up the issue of state sovereignty, their experience with the role of Australia in East Timor. To accuse Australia of allowing us to go to Australia is a wrong accusation.
