Mariana Islands Government could back track on ultimatum to workers

5:48 pm on 24 September 2002

In the Mariana Islands, the Speaker of the House of Representatives and the Lieutenant Governor are meeting now to discuss the future of 3-hundred public workers who have been told they must become contractors or resign by Friday.

The Speaker Heinz Hofschneider says they will discuss the possible recall of letters sent to the workers.

The Office of Personnel Management told them to either accept a service contract or voluntarily leave the civil service.

Mr Hofschneider says there is no clear reason for the government's action and on the surface it appears that action is politically movitivated.

He says the government is opening itself up to legal action from those whose jobs are on the line.

"It is in fact a potential class action suit scenario, because if one of the lot is deprived of the protection of the civil service, and that becomes a damage for the individual, then the administrations action in fact is inviting a law suit upon itself."
