Fiji treason trial hears evidence of pre-coup meeting in SVT' Party's offices

10:08 am on 1 February 2003

The treason trial of Fiji coup accomplice, Timoci Silatolu, has been told he was part of discussions on a petition calling for the dismissal of the Labour coalition government, dissolution of parliament and the formation of an interim government of all indigenous Fijian political parties.

The petition, which also labelled the 1997 Constitution as fraudulent and called for its abrogation, was discussed at the SVT Party's office in the parliamentary complex just a day before the May 19th 2000 coup.

Although Silatolu was part of the discussions, he did not sign the petition.

The Suva High Court was also shown Fiji TV footage of an interview given by Silatolu six days after the coup in which he asked the then president, Sir Kamisese Mara, to resign.

When Silatolu was asked what he did to help the authorities to bring the coup makers to justice, he said he didn't because he did not know who to report to.

The trial will continue on Monday.
