Solomon Islands government adopts open skies policy

10:09 am on 15 March 2003

The Solomon Islands has adopted an open skies policy in a bid to lower air travel costs.

The government, which owns Solomon Airlines, says it would welcome foreign companies prepared to invest in the airline industry.

The permanent secretary in the department of culture and tourism, Leonard Kaitu'u, says cheaper airfares would attract more travellers to Solomon Islands.

He says this policy would open competition for Solomon Airlines.

Mr Kaitu'u says talks are being held with Virgin Blue of Australia to see if a partnership can be set up to fly international and domestic routes.

The government is reportedly also negotiating with other carriers.

This comes after the opposition called on the prime minister to tell the public about its aviation plans.
