5:14 pm on 27 March 2003

The Marshall Islands president, Kessai Note, has confirmed his country's unconditional support for the United States-led war in Iraq.

Mr Note wrote a letter to President Bush to say that the nations of the world look to the US to safeguard and advance the rule of law and human liberty throughout the world.

He told Mr Bush that it was an honour for Marshall Islanders to be serving in all four branches of the US military.

Mr Note says a Compact of Free Association is a bedrock of the special and unique relationship the two nations share.

He has also reiterated that the US military has access to land, air and waters in the Marshalls to support its mission against international terrorism.
