Veteran Vanuatu political leader blames Government for his ousting

4:47 pm on 14 April 2003

Dinh van Than, the dumped President of Vanuatu's National United Party, the NUP, has blames his ousting on the ruling Vanuaaku Pati.

But Prime Minister's spokesman Daniel Bangtor, says the claim is utter nonsense.

Dinh van Than says the VP has promised Cabinet posts to the party's MPs, including the Deputy Prime Ministership, to the NUP Parliamentary leader, Willie Jimmy.

Mr Than was voted out by the NUP congress last week, losing to Ham Lini, the brother of the party founder, the late Fr Walter Lini.

The NUP had split away from the Vanuaaku Pati in 1991, but there are hopes the change of leadership will bring them together.

Daniel Bangtor says in the interests of stability the number of parties needs to be reduced.

Mr Than is opposed to any reunion and Daniel Bangtor says this is the reason the Vanuaaku Pati has been blamed for his ousting.

"because he reckons NUP should stay as it is and Vanuaaku Pati should stay as it is and any other party that has stemmed from the main Vanuaaku Pati stream should stay as it is"
