Details are now emerging that last week's meeting of Fiji's Great Council of Chiefs was asked to forgive and pardon those who carried out the coup and two associated mutinies.
The Daily Post says this has been disclosed by a Naitasiri high chief, Ratu Loco Qiolevu, who was present at the invitation of the chairman of the chiefs council, Ratu Epeli Ganilau.
Ratu Loco says the motion to forgive and pardon those involved in the upheaval and military revolt came from Bau high chief, Adi Litia Cakobau.
Ratu Loco says he argued strongly against the motion saying the perpetrators of the coup and mutinies should face the law because no one is above it.
He says he told the Great Council of Chiefs they did not plan the coup and they should not be the forum to discuss it.
Ratu Epeli Ganilau has confirmed inviting Ratu Loco to the chiefs meeting and adds that he spoke absolute sense.
Meanwhile, Adi Litia Cakobau says she will take the motion to forgive and pardon those involved in the events of 2000 back to her people for further discussion.
