Japanese flight school looks to open academy in Palau

6:52 am on 2 June 2003

A flight school in Japan is hoping to open an academy in Palau.

Palau's president, Tommy Remengesau, says the Japan Aviation academy could provide a golden opportunity to train Micronesians to fly in the region.

He also says that the academy believes it will be able to train pilots for U.S. certification because Palau falls under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration.

Mr Remengesau says the future of air travel will include more dependency on chartered planes as a safeguard against terrorism.

The Japanese Aviation Academy is to present detailed plans to the government in Palau later this year.
