Smuggling racket involving flight attendants uncovered in the Solomons

10:14 am on 8 September 2003

Intervention force officers working with the Solomon Islands Custom Department have uncovered a smuggling operation run by flight attendants.

The attendants, who work for the state owned airline, are thought to have been illegally importing cigarettes and spirits from Australia and Vanuatu for a number of years.

Four people were detained at Henderson Airport after they were found to be carry undeclared alcohol and cigarettes following a tip off from the Vanuatu authorities.

More attendants are likely to be questioned this week

The racket has prevented the Solomons government receiving thousands of dollars worth of import duties
