Fiji provinces detail demands on judges

4:47 pm on 7 October 2003

Indigenous Fijian provinces do not want judges and magistrates who are single parents, homosexuals, divorcees or remarried to be considered for appointments to the Family Court.

The Daily Post reports that this is part of the submissions made to the parliamentary standing committee on justice, law and order when it was seeking public submissions on the proposed Family Law Bill.

One of the provinces submitted that those who sit as judges and magistrates of the Family Court should be good role models who not only know the law but are mindful of the sanctity of marriage and the family unit.

The parliamentary committee was also told that the proposed Bill seemed to promote the dissolution of marriage and the power of the court to facilitate such an outcome.

Its report, tabled in parliament yesterday, says the government should promote the preservation of marriage as a sacred institution decreed in Christian faith.

Public submissions were also strongly against the rights of homosexuals and polygamy.
