Solomons public service union back in negotiations with Government over 50 percent pay demand

The Solomon Island Public Employees Union says the Prime Minister has ordered officials to re-open negotiations over its demand for a 50 percent pay rise.

A union official says the government has already committed to five percent, which is an automatic entitlement, but they want an additional 45 percent cost of living adjustment for their 2000 members.

The Government's tentative support comes despite the Finance Minister Francis Zama saying last week that an aid boost to the public service from Australia could not be used for any pay rise.

The union and government representatives are scheduled to meet later today.
