The Fiji Labour Party has welcomed moves to set up a parliamentary select committee to resolve land lease issues.
The prime minister, Laisenia Qarase, has proposed setting up such a committee when parliament meets early next year, adding that it should have a clear deadline for an early resolution of the issue.
The Labour leader, Mahendra Chaudhry, says the committee should have been set up six months ago.
He says a "talanoa" subcommittee of senior government ministers and Labour MPs recommended in its report in June that such a committee be set up.
Mr Chaudhry also wants the prime minister to refer the UN report on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination to a properly constituted select committee assisted by the Fiji Human Rights Commission.
Mr Chaudhry says the issue of racial discrimination in Fiji needs to be resolved just as urgently.
