The US Department of Transportation, has issued Kris Kringle or Santa Claus as he's more commonly known, a travel certificate, to enable him to fly interstate on the 24th and 25th of December.

In granting the certificate the Secretary of Transportation Norman Y Mineta, says Santa Claus is exceptionally fit, joyfully willing and uniquely able to engage in air travel.

He says Santa has a 100-percent on time arrival record, having never failed to deliver all of his toys by Christmas morning.

However, efforts to reach Santa's home base at the North Pole by phone to confirm when he would be passing over various parts of the Pacific were unsuccessful.

Aware of heightened security concerns, Mr Mineta says that while Santa does not have an air marshall on board his sleigh, the lead reindeer Rudolph has been told to stay alert.
