Resistance to Vanuatu school subsidy cut

4:31 pm on 26 January 2004

An appeal is circulating in Vanuatu to support a protest at a government decision to cut school subsidies by 40 percent.

The Vanuatu Daily Post reports that a citizen, Leingkone Guillaume, wants the backing of parents for a boycott of school fees until the government has answered its demands.

The appeal seeks a reduction of the fees by 70 percent and accuses government leaders of showing no concern for the lives of the young people.

The paper says parents already found it difficult to pay fees last year when certificates were withheld until fees were paid.
